Legal Writing Program

The Legal Writing Program at Vermont Law School is committed to making every student a better writer. Professors in the department bring many years of teaching and practical experience to the classroom. We offer a rigorous and innovative program that provides individualized training and close, personal supervision designed to foster excellence in legal writing.

Over the course of three semesters, students explore the fundamentals of legal writing and research while working closely with law professors who bring varied areas of expertise into the classroom. From criminal law to environmental law to current cases pending before the United States Supreme Court, our students have the opportunity to explore the breadth of the law through the Legal Writing Program.

We take writing seriously because we recognize that clear and precise legal writing is an essential skill in every field of law. Due in part to our program’s intensive training, Vermont Law School graduates have developed a reputation for fine legal writing skills among the bench and bar. The strong writing skills students develop here remain with them throughout their career, regardless of the field of law they enter.
